I visited Guanajuato when I was 12 years old, on a family trip. I didn’t remember much besides the fact that they have mummies and many tunnels. This time around I was able to appreciate the aged buildings, alleys and tunnels all over the city.
LODGING
We stayed in an Airbnb in the center of the city. Thankfully it was close to everything, so we were able to walk to the main locations for the tours and had easy access to restaurants and little shops. The heart mural below, representing the famous Callejon del Beso, was just a few minutes away from our central location. I would highly recommend staying in an Airbnb when traveling to Guanajuato, you truly get the full experience you wouldn't get staying at a hotel.

TRANSPORTATION
We flew into the Leon Airport (BJX), we arrived a little before 6 am. Once there, we realized Ubers were not allowed into the airport, so we decided to take a taxi to Guanajuato city. There were 3 of us and we paid a total of $500 pesos ($25 USD), which was fairly cheap considering it was almost an hour drive. Once you get out of the airport, Ubers are the cheapest and safest option for you in my opinion. Everyone was very friendly and we never felt unsafe while traveling through Guanajuato. There have been many articles and news reports about safety issues in Guanajuato. Please don't let this discourage you from traveling to beautiful places, of course do your research first! Remember, there are dangers everywhere you go. Be smart, use the buddy system at all times, share your location, and pay attention to your surroundings.
Callejoneada
One of the most beautiful memories from Guanajuato is experiencing a Callejoneada. I 100% recommend you do this when you visit Guanajuato. Our Callejoneada started at 9:30 pm. There was a group of about 20 people participating in it plus the guys running it, about 7 of them. The guys who run the Callejoneadas are actually students from the local university. They take you on an hour long walking "tour" of the city, visiting many important alleys and of course ending at the Callejon del Beso. The best thing was the fun environment they created! They have the whole group singing, dancing, laughing, all while walking the beautiful streets of Guanajuato. It is honestly a must do when visiting, I am sure you will not regret it! You can buy tickets for this fun event from any of the local tour guides or the students themselves.

Nieve artesanal (ice cream)
Make sure you try some of the nieves they have to offer ! They literally have every flavor you can thing of and they are all so delicious. We tried a ceviche one (yesss! it exists), aguacate, cafe, gansito, mole, and so many others. Make sure to visit as many shops as possible to taste the different flavors they each offer.
Food
There are so many amazing restaurants in Guanajuato, but you can find the real deal with the street vendors. Just walking through the streets you like find tamales, tacos al vapor, tacos, empanadas, gorditas, pan dulce, aguas frescas, raspados and so much more. Be sure to try a little bit of everything, and leave room for that ice cream ;) The food was extremely cheap, and I could not believe how much we were paying for everything we were eating. Even when sitting in a nice restaurant, we paid an average of $50 for 3 of us, including entrees and drinks!!!
Dolores Hidalgo Day Tour
This tour takes you to visit the city of Dolores Hidalgo, where the Mexican Independence started in 1810. It also takes you to visit the Jose Alfredo Jimenez (Mexican signer and composer) museum, and you also have a chance to visit San Miguel De Allende. Be ready for a long day and be sure to wear comfortable shoes! I am sure you will learn a lot!!!
I truly hope you add Guanajuato to your list! This city is full of history, stories and culture you will not find anywhere else!
